Successful Safety Committees
To achieve success in loss control efforts, management should actively support the organization’s safety program, demonstrate hands-on commitment and seek feedback to promote interest. To assist leadership in these efforts, a safety committee should be formed.
Minimum Requirements
- The safety committee should be chaired by the safety manager/supervisor or other official designated by leadership.
- Selection of committee members may be accomplished by requesting volunteers, employee or supervisor election, lottery, etc., however, all major departments should be represented.
- Committee membership should be rotated periodically to ensure a fresh perspective and maximize the number of employees involved.
- Actively involve employee participation to generate engagement.
- Invite members from senior leadership and subject matter experts to meetings to provide support, challenge viewpoints and explain new plans or policies.
- Meetings should be held regularly with a predetermined agenda.
- Meeting attendees and minutes should be recorded.
- Committee members should not become involved in personnel actions, labor relations, or matters unrelated to accident prevention.
